Balanced on the branches of a willow arched over a pond, this kingfisher is closely inspecting the water. It gives him a good view of the creatures which live below the surface, none of which I can see. As in the song by Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now refers to things that are seen from different perspectives. The clouds which are floating overhead are only indicated by their reflections. His gaze is intent upon the world below.

I watched this bear moving through the tall grass in Yellowstone National Park. Wanting to create a print to capture this memory, I made an intricate 15 color woodcut, adding a stream for interest. When I had almost completed the color edition, I decided to pull a simple print just to see what was left. I had to laugh. The single color had a more powerful impact upon me then the much more complicated edition. Because there was not enough left of the plate to pull the full final image, I carved a whole other plate in order to print , “A Brief Rest”.

This Brewer’s Blackbird was found stalking around the rim of a small pond by our house. I love the determination and fearlessness of blackbirds which I have observed chasing away Great Blue Herons venturing too close to a nest. His stance indicated a wariness which could have been something noticed that could be eaten or a danger.

After completing the work, I was contemplating several titles when I happened to hear a New York Times podcast about the “Birds Aren’t Real” mock conspiracy movement. Supposedly, birds have all been replaced by the government with spyware robotics that recharge themselves on power lines so of course the title had to be, “Am I Real?”
